Traveling to Cape Verde
The way that most people use to
come to
Cape Verde is by plane. There
are national Airline Agencies,
which assure a direct air
transport to the country from
Africa, Europe and the North and
the South of America.
The International Airport
Amilcar Cabral located on
Sal Island welcomes passengers
from all over the world.
It is possible to reach the
country by sea, because there
are good ports in all the
islands.
Passport and Visa
To enter the country, the
tourist must have a passport
with a visa issued by a Cape
Verde Consulate or Embassy, in
the country of origin, or upon
arrival a the International
Airport.
Visas are not required for
organized tourist groups if
their visit to the country is
communicated in advance to the
authorities, through one of the
local travel agencies.
Clothes
Due to the country’s tropical
and dry climate, and the
temperatures of about 25 degrees
year-round, casual and light
clothes are recommended.
Bikinis and swimsuits are a must
in the luggage. The months of
June, July, August and September
are the warmest months of the
year. Wearing a light coat at
Night may be necessary during
the windy season.
Language
Although Portuguese is the
official language, Creole is the
language that Capeverdeans speak
the most. English, Italian,
Spanish are French are well
understood and spoken by some of
local residents of the main
urban centers as well in the
main tourist places.
Transports
The main islands of the
Archipelago have an equipped
network of public transports so
as to assure the liaison from
one place to another.
A good taxi fleet is available,
as well as small buses (locally
know as Hiace) and many rental
car companies.
Itinerary and Travel Agencies
There are many travel agencies
available all over the country
working together with TACV Cabo
Verde Airlines and other tourist
agents, and international
airlines.
Accommodations
There are many boarding houses,
small hotels, apart-hotels,
hotels and resorts in the
Archipelago. In fact, tourist
can easily find a place to stay
because there are accommodation
infrastructures available in
each one of the islands.
Most Hotels accept the use of
the most used credit cards
(Visa, MasterCard, and American
Express).
The choice of the currency to be
used is up to the tourist.
Traveler’s checks are also
accepted.
Power energy used in
Cape Verde is 220W and the plugs
are similar to those used in
European countries.
Shopping and tips
Most centers are open from
Monday to Saturday, from
8 am till 7 pm.
Convenience stores and oil
stations are open everyday from
8 am till 10.30 pm.
Tips are not compulsory in any
restaurants, hotels or bars.
Money Exchange
Money can be exchange in any of
the banks agencies or in the
exchange offices around the
islands. Some hotels also
exchange certain moneys to their
clients.
Telecommunications and Post
Office
A good telecommunications system
allows you to have access to all
kind of means of communications
(cellular, broadband internet,
phone, fax, pre-paid phone
cards).
Post offices with an effective
Express Mail Service are spread
around the country.
Hospitals and Pharmacies
Health Centers and Pharmacies
are available everywhere in the
country, and hospitals are found
in the major urban and rural
centers.
Security
Capeverdeans are peaceful and
outgoing, and the country is
well known for its social
stability and absence of any
kind of conflict. As far as
security is concerned, one
should take the basic
precautions that are within the
general security rules observed
anywhere in the world.
